Hi and welcome to our monthly news roundup. Today, we’re going to be talking about some of the biggest developments in access control last month: healthcare information breaches in New Jersey, a new Forrester study on causes of breaches, and the U.S. House of Representatives’ search for a new data center.

First up, you can’t talk about biometric security without reporting on some major data breaches that may have been avoided if biometrics had been in place.  We discovered that since 2009, New Jersey healthcare providers compromised the personal information of about 1 million individuals, according to a report from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. One major breach occurred when the Jersey City Medical Center misplaced a CD filled with encrypted personal information from patients.

Our next major story further highlighted the importance of exercising control over access to data centers, since data thieves can lurk within organizations as well. Forrester’s “Understand the State of Data Security and Privacy” study found that while 36 percent of data breaches occur as a result of simple employee negligence, 25 percent were actually malicious attacks carried out by employees. This goes to show that while trust is an important characteristic of any organization, it needs to be supported by effectively managing who has access to which assets.

Our final major biometrics news story last month involves one organization that certainly needs to take security seriously – the U.S. House of Representatives. We discovered that the government body is looking for a new co-located data center facility. Among the many security measures for the contract proposal is for there to be auditable biometric access control for the data center facility, according to a report from DataCenter Dynamics. Clearly, the U.S. House of Representatives understands the need to protect data centers with biometric security. The question is, do you?
